Kitchen Tips

One of my favorite-favorite tips is about bacon. After my ex-husband moved out there would have been no way in heck I could have used an entire pound of bacon with just me and the kids. So the idea is to freeze the bacon in a way that you are still able to separate single servings (whatever the amount) from the frozen block.
Originally, I would lay all the strips out on a cookie sheet lined with waxed paper. Then dump them all in a ziplock bag once they were frozen. BUT I have run across a new one-step approach that is just genius! Megan at Not Martha illustrates this beautifully!! Freezing Bacon

Again, once I found myself alone in a house with 2 small, picky eaters I realized that nearly everything I bought seemed as if it grew to bulk size once I got it home. A head of lettuce would surely turn before I was able to eat it all. Green onions?? Right!
I found that these types of things last longer if I put a bit of paper towel or napkin in the bag with them. This works with herbs, leafy greens & veggies of the like.

Aluminum foil works with celery and lettuces, too.

When cleaning my oven I mix a paste of baking soda and water to smear on all the surfaces inside the oven. Then I bake it on for a half hour or so. burnt food wipes right off :D

For cleaning my microwave, I boil a cup of water for a minute or two. Let it set for another minute before opening the door to clean. Hardened food wipes away easily!

Chopping onions. On the bottom of the onion, where the root came from the plant, there is a gland that produces the gas or smell or whatever it is that makes us cry when we cut them. Cut this gland out by removing the bottom 1/3 or so from the onion. You need not waste more than a small cone sized piece. Just cut it out with your knife and toss in the trash, not down the disposal.

Vinegar is good for just about everything.

  • Pour some in the ‘Jet Dry’ compartment of your dishwasher. You will never waste money on that crap again.
  • Mix a solution of water/vinegar (perhaps a 3:1 ratio) to make a deodorizing spray to clean the kitchen, bathroom & even baby toys. No, it does not smell. After the solution dries it is completely odorless.
  • Warm vinegar is great for removing price tags and stickers from glass or porcelain.
  • Run vinegar through your coffeemaker to rid it of that bitter taste. Be sure to run a few cycles of just water to rinse.
